Barbara Lynn Herzstein, better known as Barbara Hershey, was born February 5, 1948 in Brooklyn, New York. Throughout her career spanning more than 50 years, she has played roles in a variety of genres, including westerns and comedies. She began acting at the age of 17 in 1965, but received widespread critical acclaim only in the 1980s. The Chicago Tribune described her as “one of America’s finest actresses” at that time. Hershey has won several awards for her work, including a National Board of Review Award for her performance in Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), an Independent Spirit Award for her performance in The Portrait of a Lady (1996), and an Emmy Award for her performance in A Killing in a Small Town (1990). She has also been nominated for a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
It was for her role in A Killing in a Small Town (1990) that Hershey won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries/TV Film. The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) and The Portrait of a Lady (1996) earned her Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress. During the latter film, she won the Los Angeles Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress as well as an Academy Award nomination. For her roles in Shy People (1987) and A World Apart (1988), she was awarded two Cannes Film Festival Best Actress awards. She was featured in Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), for which she was nominated for the British Academy Film Award for Best Supporting Actress, Garry Marshall’s melodrama Beaches (1988), and in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan (2010), she earned a second nomination for the British Academy Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. For instance, in Beaches, she played a rich but lonely woman who befriends a much younger and less privileged girl, played by Bette Midler.
Hershey, whose personal life conflicted with her acting goals, gained a reputation early in her career as a hippie. During her six-year relationship with actor David Carradine, with whom she had a child, her career declined. Her desire to focus on her family caused her to turn down several film roles, which led to her being typecast as a hippie actress. She also experienced backlash from the press for her relationship and child out of wedlock. She experimented with changing her stage name, which she later regretted. Her personal life was heavily publicized and ridiculed during this time. After separating from Carradine and changing her stage name back to Hershey, her acting career took off. Her personal life became more private as she progressed in her career. With the release of Black Swan, she received critical acclaim and a BAFTA nomination for her portrayal of an overbearing mother and former ballerina. She quickly realized that her original stage name was the way to go and that she should have never strayed from it. Plus, it was much easier to remember and spell!
