Gerontophilia is the primary sexual attraction of the elderly. Gerontophiles or gerontosexuals are people with such sexual preferences.
The word gerontophilia was coined in 1901 by psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing. It derives from Greek: geron, meaning “old person” and philia, meaning “friendship”. A classic 1886 book on sexual deviancy by the Austrian psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing, Psycopathia Sexualis, described this particular age orientation as “erotic age orientation.” Krafft-Ebing offers a case study of a 29-year-old man who reportedly finds sex with “old women” pleasurable after being seduced by one when he was a teenager. His definition was simple and nonspecific, describing gerontophilia simply as “the love of persons of advanced age.”
The definition of “old” is extremely important in nosology, since younger people’s perception of “old” varies; it’s unclear whether we’re talking about Sex and the City-old or Golden Girls-old. Gerontophilia has evolved since Krafft-Ebing’s day, according to British psychiatrist Hadrian Ball in a 2005 review. A sexologist defined gerontophilia as follows in 1981:
Describes a situation in which a young adult is dependent on the actuality or fantasy of erotosexual activity with a much older partner to initiate and maintain arousal and facilitate or achieve orgasm.
